German food and drink are of the highest quality, with many shops and restaurants serving an array of regional delicacies. Whether you’re from Germany or are just visiting, knowing what to order when in a German restaurant can be a bit tricky; some dishes are traditional in specific regions and may not be found everywhere. Here’s a list of my top five favourite German food and drink you must try during your stay here!

-German Chocolate Cake or Torte

This sponge cake has chocolate liquor, egg yolks, butter, sugar, and vanilla flavouring. It is usually served warm or cold with whipped cream and strawberries if desired. Don’t miss the chance to try this decadent delight.

-Schweinshaxe

This roast pork shank is traditionally eaten with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes with gravy. It is a very filling dish, and it is one of my personal favourites!

-Roasted Root Vegetables

Germans love to eat their vegetables, and they are served at every dinner table. My favourite roasted root vegetables are parsnips and carrots, although potatoes, onions, and beets are also standard in German cuisine.

-Sauerkraut/Choucroute garnie`(sauerkraut with sausage)

Sauerkraut is incredibly popular in Germany. It is made from shredded white cabbage, which is fermented for a few weeks before eating. It is usually served with pork or sausage, but it is also great on its own.

-Schnitzel mit Pommes und Krautsalat(breaded pork schnitzel with fries and sauerkraut)

This dish can be found in most German restaurants, and it consists of a breaded pork cutlet served with fries (called Pommes Frites) and sauerkraut or choucroute garnie with gravy. Schnitzel is very popular throughout Europe, especially in Germany.

-Potatoes au Gratin

Potatoes au Gratin is a typical side dish served with many meals. It is made from potatoes mashed with milk and butter and then rolled in breadcrumbs. They are then browned in the oven. The most recognizable flavour for this dish is cheese, which can be added to the top after it has been baked, but it is unnecessary as you will find all kinds of flavourings used when making potatoes au gratin.

-Weisswurst mit Kartoffel (German white sausage with potato salad)

This meal consists of a soft German sausage (called Weisswurst) served with white sauce, mashed potatoes, and green salad, as German potato salad is called. It is trendy in Germany and is also often served as one of the main courses at traditional German Christmas dinners.

If you have the opportunity to try any of these foods during your visit to Germany, please do! They are truly delicious, and you will be able to sample some traditional German cuisine. I hope this article has been helpful for anyone planning a trip here, and I wish you a delicious and enjoyable visit to Deutschland.

Conclusion

In conclusion, Germans have a very developed and distinctive cuisine. Their dishes are very high in calories and indulgent, which is the reason why many people believe Germans are obsessed with food. This unique food reflects their culture and the people, who are known for their traditional values.
