A few years ago, I retired after 30+ years in the Information Technology (IT) industry. I am part of a generation who can expect a significantly longer life expectancy than my great grandparents had (according to Wikipedia, the worldwide life expectancy from 1950 to 2020 changed from around 47 to 73). When they retired, my great-grandparents generation wanted to rest and spend time with their grandchildren. In the recent era of retirees, baby boomers like me expect to live a much more active lifestyle for a lot longer. Current retirees want to do things they enjoy and no longer do things they need to. They want to figure out something that keeps their mind and body busy.
Retiree Retooling
Whether we are looking to fund an additional trip each year, pay for that golf club membership, or finance a trip with the grandchildren, today’s retirees are likely to do some form of part-time work. This will keep us busy and supplement our retirement income. Like me, many current retirees worked in professional service industries, where we regularly held presentations. Modern presentations are not done in person as much in this internet age, and they are now often released as videos. It is not tricky for retirees like me to switch from doing live presentations to releasing videos. Furthermore, these videos can be profitable when distributed through a video monetization platform.
Video Monetization
Since I have retired from IT, I have completed certification to teach English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), started teaching EFL online, and built an eLearning platform to provide a combined IT tutoring/EFL learning experience. To drive traffic to my website, I have been looking at video monetization services that allow me to release videos about my site’s services. I have established a YouTube channel, but I would like to consider other distribution platforms. Such platforms provide a variety of ways for me to profit from my videos. I can get paid for subscriptions to my eLearning platform, but I can also get paid directly for my videos.
Your article What are SVOD, TVOD, AVOD: Choosing the Best Monetization Method nicely explained video monetize options available to me. At this stage in my video monetization journey, subscription video on demand (SVOD) and transactional video on demand (TVOD) platforms do not seem to be good choices for me at the moment. However, advertising-based video on demand (AVOD) appears to be a much better option. I will be looking at AVOD options, in addition to YouTube, to help me supplement my retirement nest egg.
Video Monetization Platforms
It was interesting to learn that I have multiple AVOD options to deliver my video content. I like that I can use existing platforms like YouTube, Hulu, and Crackle, or I could also have a custom app developed for me. Your informative articles helped me understand that I can pursue my video monetization options on my own by releasing my content on AVOD platforms like YouTube, or I could work with a team to deliver my content through other media.
Conclusion
As a recent retiree, I want to keep my mind busy and put some extra cash in my pocket. As an IT professional, I am comfortable learning new technologies. Expanding on my experience with delivering hundreds of presentations in my career, I am well-positioned to continue to help people to grow. I can then benefit from video services and platforms by retooling my in-person presentation skills into video presentation skills. I can then monetize those videos in a variety of ways. Thank you for helping me find an interesting path to pursue in my retirement.
